A critic and journalist, J. Emil Sennewald works on notions of exhibition, criticism, the truth of images and the reconstruction of perceptions. He holds a PhD in philosophy and has been involved in higher education for 20 years. A full professor of philosophy at the École supérieure d'art de Clermont Métropole (ÉSACM), he currently teaches as an associate professor and director of theoretical research on the practices, histories and theories of photography at the UFR Arts, Philosophie et Esthétique of the Université Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint-Denis.
Continuing his work in research and creation, he set up and directed the "Figures de transition" research group at the ÉSACM. At Ensad Paris, he co-directed the "EnsadLab Displays" research group, dedicated to exhibitions under digital conditions. He is currently working with Petra Köhle and Nicolas Vermot-Petit-Outhenin on the 'En Fonte, Im Schmelz' project, which focuses on representations of the Furka Pass landscape at the Institut de recherche en arts visuels (IRAV).
A very active art critic and winner of the 2016 AICA France prize, he is the author of numerous critical texts published in art reviews, exhibition catalogues and artists' books in France, Switzerland, Austria and Germany.
